New Instagram Compare ads – Personalize What You See

Instagram has been implementing many changes recently. Some of them include the new algorithms for the landing feed and others all actions related to the new feature ‘Stories’. Regarding Instagram ads, there is a new Instagram questionnaire with comparing graphics/pictures, appearing the last days, in which 2 pictures of Instagram ads are presented and the user has the choice to the like one of them or none.

This new approach of Instagram reminds us of the Youtube questionnaires that pop up before a video starts. Instead of individual corporate conclusions and marketing strategies through media and visitors (how effective was the campaign? Was the picture and the content strong enough?), Instagram wishes to improve the ads that are presented on each user. This may be part of a new algorithm that will choose in a different way how the posts appear on the feed and more specifically how to target better ads through the use of personalization.

There is an indication that Instagram ads do not have the maximum and expected success. Users’ background and likes are drawn by their Facebook profile and Instagram behavior (likes, followings, hashtags). But this appears not to be enough.

From a personal experience the comparison that I was asked to do after pressing ‘GET STARTED’ when I was given the choice ‘Personalize What You See. Quickly compare what you see on Instagram to help us know what you like.’, was between ads under the categories: Fashion, Travel, Food, Beauty, Leisure. These categories are close to what I upload, the users I follow and the daily likes I make.

The truth is that I chose to like or did not choose any at all, based on the quality of the pictures, the corporate message and the professional depiction in relation the category. Maybe that was not the best approach to go about it, but I am looking forward to seeing how these choices will ‘personalize’ my feed and how many times I will ‘like’ the ads presented to my feed.
